Nestled in the heart of Bolzano, Italy, a city where the merging of two cultures paints a charming tapestry, Castel Hörtenberg stands as a testament to history, luxury, and exquisite taste. As you step into this Renaissance castle, you are transported to a realm where time seems to stand still, offering a tranquil oasis just moments away from the bustling city.

A Rich Heritage Unveiled

The story of Castel Hörtenberg dates back over five centuries, when Leonard Hiertmair transformed an estate in one of Bolzano’s oldest neighborhoods into a magnificent mansion. Leonard Hiertmair, later known as von Hörtenberg, left an indelible mark on Bolzano, serving as its mayor for four terms and securing the title of baron from the emperor in 1584. Under his stewardship, the castle became a symbol of prestige and influence.

In the 19th century, the Giovanelli family acquired Castel Hörtenberg, aligning their name with its rich history. They played an essential role in supporting the Tyrolean revolt and hosted Andreas Hofer, the commander of the insurgents, within the castle’s walls in 1808 and 1809. The castle’s importance continued to grow, solidifying its status as a Bolzano landmark.

At the turn of the 20th century, the castle changed hands once again, becoming part of the von Fuchs estate. In recent years, it was lovingly acquired by the Podini family, known for their commitment to excellence, environmental consciousness, and innovation in their projects.

Modern Comfort Meets Historic Grandeur

Today, Castel Hörtenberg seamlessly blends historical grandeur with contemporary comfort. The castle’s meticulous refurbishment painstakingly uncovered its original ambiance, restoring it to its ancient splendor. As you explore its corridors and chambers, you can’t help but feel the echoes of centuries past, all while indulging in modern amenities.

The rooms and suites at Castel Hörtenberg offer a variety of experiences. The Stube Suite, the most luxurious room available, is a charming blend of sophistication and tradition and features an elegant décor with an ancient majolica stove, frescoed ceilings, and expansive views over the park. The Loft Suite, located in the attic with cathedral ceilings, offers breathtaking vistas of the Dolomites and includes a private sauna. The Prestige Suite, with its spacious and airy design, promises an unforgettable stay with meticulous attention to detail.

Culinary Delights in a Historic Cellar

The Cantina Hörtenberg, nestled within the centuries-old wine cellar, invites guests to a unique gourmet experience. Wooden tables beneath imposing barrel vaults set the stage for savoring South Tyrolean dishes with a Mediterranean twist. The wine selection is a connoisseur’s dream, featuring regional and Italian wines, as well as treasures from around the world. Guests can also enjoy wines from the owner’s estate winery in Tuscany, Ampeleia, ensuring a perfect pairing with the chef’s creations.

During the warmer months, the castle’s garden beckons with its lush greenery and culinary delights. In this shaded oasis, local, seasonal, and Mediterranean ingredients take center stage. The chef’s gastronomic proposals are expertly paired with selected wines from the extensive list.

A Spa Experience Rooted in Tradition

The Hörtenberg Spa is a testament to the ancient Roman philosophy of “health through water.” Rooted in history, it celebrates the love for the body that has transcended centuries. The spa invites you to connect with nature’s sensations and the elements surrounding you, providing a haven to escape daily stress and anxiety. Each treatment, inspired by the Renaissance era, offers a sense of pure inner well-being, aligning you with nature’s innate balance.

Holistic Wellbeing and Relaxation

The spa menu at Castel Hörtenberg includes a range of treatments designed to rejuvenate and restore. The Kirai Kobido, an ancient Japanese face and neck massage, promotes collagen production and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. The Vodder Drainage Massage, of Danish origin, stimulates lymphatic circulation and enhances the body’s defenses.

Holistic treatments like the Hot Stone and Pantai Luar offer deep relaxation, while sports massages and myorelaxant therapies help improve muscle elasticity and overall physical performance. Wine therapy, a celebration of body care, blends scents and sensations for radiant skin and inner health.

A Bolzano Oasis

Beyond the castle’s walls, Bolzano awaits with its Mitteleuropean charm, cultural heritage, and gastronomic delights. Take a stroll under the city’s porticos, explore the Archeological Museum featuring the man from the ice age, or ascend the cable car to the plateau for breathtaking views of the Dolomites.

Bolzano is also the gateway to the South Tyrol wine route, where ancient towns, unspoiled hamlets, and picturesque lakes await wine enthusiasts. Nearby, Lake Garda, Verona’s Roman charm, and Milan’s shopping allure beckon for further exploration.

Castel Hörtenberg is more than a place to stay; it’s a contemporary retreat where elegance and comfort coexist. Here, the past harmoniously melds with the present, inviting guests to savor both history and modernity in the most beautiful way.
