In the summer, we pay so much more attention to our skincare routines. You’d hardly get me to step out without making sure I’d put on a solid SPF and packed a refreshing face mist. But, we should be giving the same amount of attention to hair because the summer extremes can really take its toll on our locks. I’m sure you’ve noticed by now your hair’s annual trends in the summer— dryer, frizzier than it is at other times of the year? That’s because the rules for taking care of your hair during the rest of the year don’t apply as well during the summer. The salty or chlorine-treated waters and hot, humid airs need to be battled differently. Here are a few tips to keep your hair in shape for the summer:

Go Natural
In the summer, opt to use less heat on your hair and style it more naturally when possible. The heat of the summer can boost the damage that is done to the hair normally through the irons and dryers we use. Loose styles and fresh-off-the-beach waves are a great way to take advantage of using less heated tools anyway!

What Condition Your Conditioner is In
While the heat works against you, so does not having a good moisturizer. Washing your hair too much leads to losing natural oils on your scalp, thus leading to extra dryness. While washing is unavoidable, when you do wash, choose to use quality products that are right for your hair type and the season. Plus try to add in a deep conditioning treatment at least once a fortnight to help repair damaged hair. Another tip is to remember before heading out into the pool or the sea, wash your hair and use a leave-in conditioner. This way, it won’t absorb as much salt water or chlorine from the pool which can lead to dryness or damage later.

Cover Ups Aren’t Just For Your Body
The sun can be harsh and being out in direct sunlight doesn’t just impact your skin. Wearing a hat or scarf can go a long way. It can help keep your color from fading due to direct sun exposure, plus, you won’t be sweating away the much-needed moisture that keeps your hair from drying out. As well, UV hair products are a great way to provide an additional cover to keep your hair from getting scorched under the hot sun.
