ITS ORIGIN
In the Scottish Highlands, close to Craigellachie, on a 390-acre estate, Alexander Reid established the Macallan distillery. A farmer who built the distillery on eight hectares of the property leased first from Earl of Seafield. The name “Macallan” is a combination of two Gaelic words: magh, which means fertile land, and ellen, which means “of St. Fillan,” an Irish priest who journeyed to Scotland in the ninth century to teach Christianity.
The brand’s distillery, which is close to Craigellachie, received its initial distilling permit owing to Alexander Reid. James Stewart (of the Glen Spey tasting room) purchased it in 1886 and started the rebuilding. This previous agricultural distillery was purchased by Roderick Kemp in 1892. Up until 1996, it was still owned by the Kemp family. The number of stills produced by the brand increased from 6 to 21 in the ten-year period (from 1965 to 1975).

LITTLE STILLS
One of the earliest Scottish distilleries to receive a legal license was Macallan.
