Villa Eden in Merano has long been recognized as one of Europe’s most refined medical wellness destinations — a place where preventive medicine, nutrition, and luxury hospitality intersect in a highly structured approach to health. During my stay, I sat down with Dr. Emanuele De Nobili, the Medical Director of Villa Eden, to discuss what detox truly means today, and how it is applied within a medical framework rather than a wellness trend.
Doctor, why is detox so important in today’s lifestyle?
Detox is very important, especially in the Western lifestyle. Our food is often industrial, and there is exposure not only to processed nutrition, but also to alcohol, tobacco, environmental pollution, pesticides, and even electromagnetic stress. All of us accumulate toxins over time. The purpose of detox is not something extreme — it is about supporting the body’s natural ability to eliminate these substances and improve cellular function.

How often do you recommend doing a detox program?
Usually, I recommend doing a structured detox twice a year. The ideal timing is spring and autumn, although it can be adapted depending on the individual. A program of seven to ten days is generally sufficient to produce meaningful physiological changes and reset the body.
What does a typical detox program at Villa Eden include?
Each guest undergoes several medical consultations — at the beginning, during the stay, and at the end — to personalize the program. Nutrition is a key pillar. We use organic ingredients, and meals are designed by Michelin-starred chef Marcello Corrado. There is no gluten, no dairy, no refined sugar, and no alcohol. We include high-quality proteins such as grass-fed meat, free-range poultry, and wild-caught fish, always adapted to the season.

What happens in the first days of detox?
The first three days can be uncomfortable. Some people experience headaches, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms. This is part of the body’s adaptation phase as it begins to eliminate toxins. After this period, most guests feel a clear improvement — better sleep, more energy, reduced bloating, and improved mental clarity. The brain becomes less foggy, and the body feels lighter.
What are the short-term and long-term benefits?
In the short term, we see improved sleep, increased energy, skin improvement, reduced inflammation, and often weight loss due to metabolic reset. In the long term, if guests continue even partially with the recommendations, the effects can last for several months. However, lifestyle plays a key role — if one returns completely to old habits, the effect naturally diminishes over time.

Can you explain the therapies used during the program?
At Villa Eden Longevity Institute, our detoxification philosophy is based on a carefully curated synergy of nutrition, advanced medical therapies, and tailored physical activity, designed to gently restore the body’s natural balance and support its physiological cleansing processes.
A key starting point of the programme is our Nourishing Detoxifying Body Treatment, conceived as a preparatory phase to support the elimination of toxins and restores the skin’s natural moisture balance. This is followed by our biothermal treatment, which is specifically designed to stimulate metabolic function and support the efficiency of the body’s primary detoxification organs, including the liver, kidneys, and intestines.
Among our signature approaches is the Marine Algae Hydro-Detox Therapy, a highly effective treatment which harnesses the regenerative power of water to stimulate circulation, boost metabolism and promote deep relaxation. Followed by the application of marine algae, rich in minerals, vitamins and antioxidants it supports cellular regeneration.

We further complement the programme with drainage and decongestive therapies using clay wraps, designed to reduce fluid retention, support the elimination of excess interstitial water, and provide an anti-inflammatory effect. The result is a sculpted refreshed silhouette.
In addition, cryotherapy treatments are integrated to stimulate circulation, enhance metabolic activation, and support overall cellular vitality.
Equally essential is the role of movement and physical re-education, which forms a cornerstone of our approach. Guests benefit from both individual training sessions and guided group activities led by highly qualified professionals. These include mindful walking, aquatic training, yoga, and targeted breathing exercises, all carefully adapted to individual needs to enhance lymphatic flow, metabolic efficiency, and overall wellbeing

What makes Villa Eden’s approach unique?
One of the most important elements is personalization. We use advanced diagnostics, including an epigenetic hair test that analyzes over 800 biomarkers — vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.
Based on these results, we can tailor IV infusions and therapies individually. For example, one person may need vitamin B complex and antioxidants, while another may require amino acids or vitamin C. There is no standard protocol — everything is adapted to the individual’s biology.

What is the ultimate goal of the detox program?
The objective goes far beyond short-term weight loss or a temporary sense of wellbeing. It is, first and foremost, a physiological reset. Our aim is to restore balance at a cellular level and re-establish a healthier internal baseline for the body.
When guests continue to apply even part of the recommendations after leaving Villa Eden, the positive effects are not only maintained but can be extended and consolidated over several months.
