From the moment I glimpsed the iconic Faraglioni rocks jutting out of the cobalt-blue sea, I knew I had arrived somewhere extraordinary. Perched precariously on the cliffs of Capri, the illustrious Hotel Punta Tragara awaited me, an oasis of serenity and luxury amidst the island’s rugged beauty. With its rich heritage and best views on the island, Punta Tragara promised an unforgettable stay, and it delivered beyond my wildest expectations.
The journey to Capri was an adventure worthy of a Mediterranean fairytale. After a frantic trip involving a train ride to Naples from Rome, a transfer to the port, and a ferry across the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean, I was ready for tranquility. As the ferry docked and I climbed the cliffside roads to the Piazzetta, the bustling energy of Capri surrounded me. Good thing that I didn’t have to worry about my luggage – everything was taken care of by the hotel from the moment I stepped into the Blue Island. When I finally reached Punta Tragara after a beautiful walk around the center, a calm washed over me. Nestled at the end of a quiet pathway, the hotel seemed a world away from the vibrant town center.
The façade of Punta Tragara is immediately captivating, a peach-hued marvel that appears to bloom from the cliffs, just as Le Corbusier envisioned nearly a century ago. The architect’s vision of a structure harmoniously blending with nature is evident in every corner of the property. Described by Le Corbusier as “an architectural flowering, an emanation of the rock,” Punta Tragara felt like an organic extension of the island’s rocky landscape, bathed in the Mediterranean’s radiant light.
Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by the front desk staff and handed a cold glass of lemonade made with Capri’s famous lemons. The refreshing drink was a perfect introduction to the hotel’s blend of luxury and local charm.
The highlight of my stay was undoubtedly the view from my room. Stepping onto the terrace, I was met with a panorama that took my breath away. Surrounded by lush greenery and having the best views of Faraglioni rocks and Marina Piccola, I felt like I had the entire vista to myself. The room itself was a masterpiece of design, with mild Mediterranean colors and panoramic views from all sides, including the bathroom. Imagine taking a shower while observing the most iconic Faraglioni rocks. The terrace, adorned with comfortable seating and a cute balcony with a dining area, was perfect for savoring the views at any time of day.
Dining at Punta Tragara was an experience unto itself. The hotel’s restaurant, Le Monzù with one Michelin star, helmed by Executive Chef Antonio Pedana, offered a culinary journey that was as breathtaking as the scenery. On my first night, I indulged in the tasting menu, “Labirinto di Sapori,” a labyrinth of flavors that delighted my senses. This choice proved to be a delightful voyage through a series of exquisitely crafted dishes, each one a surprise until it was placed before me.
The meal began with an amuse-bouche of foie gras and scampi, a harmonious blend of rich and delicate flavors that set the tone for the courses to follow. The beef tartare with hazelnuts was a revelation, its textures and flavors perfectly balanced. As I moved through the courses, the linguine with lime and bottarga stood out for its bright, zesty notes, while the amberjack, prepared tataki-style and breaded with panko, showcased Chef Pedana’s skill in blending international techniques with local ingredients.
The highlight of the evening was the lamb dish, accompanied by beetroots and red currants. The tender meat and vibrant accompaniments created a symphony of flavors that was both comforting and exciting. Dessert was a playful deconstructed piña colada, a fittingly light and refreshing end to a spectacular meal. Each course was thoughtfully paired with wines from an extensive list, curated to enhance the flavors and elevate the dining experience.
Days at Punta Tragara were spent basking in the sun by the hotel’s two exquisite swimming pools, each offering a serene escape with the dramatic backdrop of the Mediterranean. The Gili Beauty & Wellness area provided a sanctuary of relaxation, with treatments incorporating elements from Capri’s natural environment. I also enjoyed its beautiful terrace with live music and original cocktails – perhaps, the best aperitivos on the island with stunning sunset views and chic ambiance.
Exploring Capri from Punta Tragara was a delightful adventure. The hotel’s staff arranged excursions to the island’s famous Blue, Green, and White Grottos, where the play of light and water created an otherworldly experience. A stroll to the nearby Certosa di San Giacomo, a monastery turned museum, offered a glimpse into Capri’s rich cultural history. Walking along Via Camerelle, lined with chic boutiques, I indulged in a bit of shopping, taking home a piece of Capri’s fashionable flair.
But what truly set Punta Tragara apart was the impeccable service. The staff’s polished and confident style ensured that every aspect of my stay was seamless. From organizing transfers to providing insightful recommendations, their attention to detail was unparalleled. The front office manager, even gave me a fascinating historical tour of the property, sharing stories of its transformation from a private villa to a luxury hotel.
On my last morning, I savored breakfast on my private balcony facing Faraglioni rocks, the view of the sea sparkling in the morning light as invigorating as the espresso. I will cherish this moment until the next summer! Saying goodbye to Punta Tragara was bittersweet. The serene beauty, luxurious comfort, and warm hospitality made my stay truly magical. As I prepared to leave, the front desk outlined my morning itinerary with precision, ensuring a smooth journey back to Naples.
My time at Hotel Punta Tragara was a sublime escape into the heart of Capri’s timeless allure. The blend of historical elegance, modern luxury, and breathtaking natural beauty created an experience I will cherish forever. If you seek a sanctuary of sophistication and serenity in one of the world’s most enchanting locations, look no further than Punta Tragara.
