Oceanco, renowned for its exceptional yacht construction, celebrates a significant milestone as its iconic project, the 111m/364ft Y722, makes its way from the construction facilities in Zwijndrecht to the outfitting facilities in Alblasserdam. This remarkable vessel, designed by Oceanco and Espen Øino International with interiors from Mark Berryman Design, aims to join a select fleet of privately-owned vessels engaged in scientific research, discovery, and exploration. The completion of this milestone marks a crucial step forward as Y722 prepares for sea trials and commissioning, scheduled for 2025.
Y722 is a collaborative masterpiece, designed by Oceanco and Espen Øino International, with exquisite interiors crafted by Mark Berryman Design. The yacht’s purpose is to join a distinguished fleet of privately-owned vessels engaged in scientific research, discovery, and exploration. This extraordinary creation is the result of a constructive partnership between Oceanco, YTMC, and Y.CO, along with valuable contributions from numerous suppliers, subcontractors, co-makers, and the fleet’s operational crews.
Driven by the desire to redefine the capabilities of a yacht, Y722 incorporates innovative technologies and introduces radical layout changes that challenge the conventional notion of a “traditional” yacht. Central to its design is a focus on fostering a sense of community on board, offering an extensive array of unique features and accommodations for 22 guests and 33 crew members.
Environmental efficiency has been a guiding principle throughout the design process, aligning with Y722’s scientific aspirations and cruising plans. At its core lies a diesel-electric power plant and a large battery energy storage system, enabling smooth engine operation and extended periods of emission-free silent running. Moreover, the yacht boasts a waste heat recovery system that enhances efficiency, while an advanced wastewater treatment system ensures high environmental standards, even in special areas.
To ensure reliability, ease of maintenance, and serviceability, the yacht’s design incorporates robust materials and flexible, redundant technical systems. Furthermore, meticulous engineering has been employed to minimize noise and vibration, guaranteeing an exceptional level of comfort on board, making Y722 one of the most tranquil yachts on the water.
Dan Morgan, YTMC Managing Director, expresses pride in the achievement: “Y722 will break new boundaries at Oceanco, with industry-leading noise & vibration characteristics. The focus on usability and operability will provide a holistic comfortable experience for all aboard. We are thrilled to witness the features we contributed to during the project conception come to life through collaboration with Oceanco and the hard work of everyone involved. Y722 will certainly be something to be seen… but not heard.”
Y722’s commitment to collective learning is evident in its onboard layout, challenging the traditional division between crew and guest quarters. The living spaces, including a distinctive combined crew mess and dining room, have been designed to foster synergy among all those on board, encouraging the mutual cultivation of ideas and passions. Crew wellbeing is prioritized, with enhanced accommodations and dedicated gyms and wellness areas.
Marcel Onkenhout, Oceanco CEO, expresses his enthusiasm for the project: “At Oceanco, we thrive on working with visionary clients and their teams to build yachts that challenge the status quo and look to the future for inspiration. Y722 is a trailblazer in every aspect, from its unique layout and philanthropic operations to its forward-thinking, future-proofed technical capabilities.”
Charlie Birkett, Y.CO CEO, and Co-Founder shares the excitement: “We’re thrilled to be working with Oceanco, YTMC, and the Fleet Operational Team on the development of such a groundbreaking yacht. This project represents the vast scope and vital ambition, and our Coordination, Brokerage, Technical, and Management Teams are collaborating closely with the Fleet Crew to deliver this exciting project. We hope it will set a precedent for greater learning, equality, and sustainability in our industry.”
Y722 is set to be delivered in 2025, marking the culmination of Oceanco’s commitment to innovation and excellence. This pioneering yacht’s journey embodies a new era of yachting, where environmental responsibility, collaborative design, and exceptional experiences converge to redefine luxury on the seas.
