Dr. Mikhail Gaponov is a plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgeon. He is the only plastic surgeon from Russia practicing in UAE. Dr. Gaponov graduated from the most prestigious and leading medical university in Russia I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University in 2005. Dr. Gaponov’s first specialty is maxillofacial surgery. On his second year of medical university (2008), he was already noticed and entrusted to perform his first operations with real patients. Dr. Mikhail Gaponov has an extensive work experience in the most prestigious Russian clinics. He worked at the department of maxillofacial surgery and hospital surgical dentistry at Sechenov University, then as part of the surgeons of the Clinic of Plastic Surgery and Oncology he performed reconstructive operations in the head and neck area for patients after tumors. Perhaps the most challenging part of his experience was a side effect of cancer treatment that often increases tissue and vascular fragility that significantly complicates the surgeon’s work and requires the highest level of skill to achieve a successful result. During this period, he also taught surgery to young colleagues in the Department of Plastic Surgery, having received the right to conduct this activity along with a scientific degree.
During all these years, he was also involved in cosmetic surgery performing high-tech operations. The challenging experience of performing surgeries for patients after diseases gave him truly unique skills and a certain ease in working with healthy patients, as well as forming a special, personalized approach to everyone. What are your most prominent achievements to date?
My biggest achievement is my wonderful family – my lovely wife and four kids. Also, I have a PhD in clinical medicine. My specializations are maxillofacial and plastic surgery. I also highly perform reconstructive surgery. It is considered the most challenging part of the surgery, as we repair and replace parts of the body and organs after cancer, or any other diseases, injuries, and even birth defects.
I’m very proud of the fact that I’m the only Russian doctor who has the UAE official medical license with the right to do surgeries and esthetical treatments. UAE and Russia have lots of differences in terms of the education system and certificates, so it’s a big challenge to get accredited here.
What do you like about your work?
As a surgeon, I love to be able to make people happy and more confident with my skills and experience. It brings me a lot of joy!
Why Russian plastic surgeons are considered one of the best in the world?
There are many good plastic surgeons all over the world, but in Russia, we have a few advantages that make a difference. First of all, we have more practice due to the specifics of the medical education system in Russia. We start to practice early during the education period with real patients. In plastic surgery, it is one of the key factors for a successful result and smooth recovery. Secondly, we have clinical experience which means that we are able to react fast in any kind of unexpected situations (which don’t happen often of course) and make sure the recovery goes fast with no danger to your health. That brings minimal risks to patients.
What are the benefits of being your client?
I have clinical judgment and many years of experience. I treat each client with an individual approach and do my best to reach ideal results in any work I do.
What are the advantages of your techniques?
I didn’t invent anything new, but I work only with the most advanced equipment and up-to-date techniques to guarantee the best results and fast recovery.
What is your signature treatment?
I would say, I have a few. I’m very famous for liposuction and body contouring. Every time I do lipomodeling I feel like I’m doing art! Also, a facelift is one of my signature treatments.
What are the most challenging tasks in your work?
The most complicated part of my work is to replace an organ or a part of a body for reconstructive surgery. After some complicated diseases, such as cancer, for example, people may lose a part of an eye or a tongue or might lose a function of their throat. I can replace it, so people can socialize and live a normal life.
How long does the recovery period last after any plastic surgery?
Everything is very individual and depends on the type of plastic surgery. It depends on your nutrition factors, the climate you live in, genetics, etc. If we say approximately, a recovery can take from two weeks up to several months.
What are the most advanced plastic surgery technologies that you are using in your work?
With the most advanced equipment and techniques, I’m able to achieve excellent results. The technique of High Definition Liposculpture, for example, is one of my favorite ones. It was born in response to the need to sculpt the human body in its four dimensions to obtain the athletic and natural shape that any patient is looking for.
How to look perfect at any age? Any specific procedures you would recommend to try?
If you live a healthy lifestyle, eat accordingly to your body type and health condition, and do sports and esthetic treatments regularly, you’ll be able to keep your body and face in a good condition for a very long time. If we talk about cosmetology treatments I also do I recommend doing Hydrafacial and hardware face massages on a regular basis. If we talk about facelift I recommend doing it after 45 years old only. The effect can last up to 20 years.
Body contouring you can do basically at any age, but you should remember that the results will last depending on your regular hard work – you should control the food you eat, and the exercises you do.
What are the challenges you face working in the UAE and with clients who are based here?
I don’t see any major differences, it all goes from case to case. If you eat junk food, for example, the recovery period might last longer than usual.
