Discovering the Hidden Charm of Kalkan with Lures Hotel & Beach Club

Between the turquoise waters of the Turkish Riviera and the ancient landscapes of Lycia, this coastal retreat offers a gateway to one of the Mediterranean’s most captivating destinations.

The journey from Dalaman Airport to Kalkan was a pleasant surprise in itself. Although the distance is approximately 120 kilometres, the drive took just an hour and a half, with virtually no traffic along the way. The road was smooth, the scenery increasingly beautiful, and the transition from the airport to the Mediterranean landscape felt remarkably effortless. Lures Hotel & Beach Club had arranged a seamless airport pick-up, making the arrival experience particularly relaxed.

Yet it was the setting that made the strongest first impression. Arriving at Lures, I found myself mesmerised by the surrounding nature, the sweeping coastal scenery and the particular beauty of Kalkan. Situated next to Kaş, this picturesque seaside town has become one of the Turkish Riviera’s most appealing destinations, attracting travellers in search of natural beauty, understated sophistication and authentic Mediterranean character.

Once a traditional fishing village, Kalkan is now known for its charming old harbour, narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, wooden shutters and balconies overflowing with bougainvillea. Its architecture reflects the area’s multicultural past, including its Ottoman Greek heritage, while waterfront restaurants and boutique shops give the town an intimate, distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere. Evenings are best enjoyed slowly, perhaps over freshly caught seafood and traditional meze overlooking the harbour.

The wider Kaş region offers considerably more than beautiful beaches and sunshine. This is ancient Lycia, a civilisation whose remarkable legacy remains scattered across the landscape. History enthusiasts can explore the archaeological sites of Patara, Xanthos and Letoon, discover ancient theatres and Lycian rock-cut tombs, or visit the remains of Antiphellos in Kaş.

For more adventurous travellers, the possibilities are equally compelling. The famous Lycian Way, one of Türkiye’s most celebrated long-distance hiking routes, passes through mountains, traditional villages and ancient settlements, offering spectacular Mediterranean views. Scuba diving is another major attraction, particularly around Kaş, internationally recognised for its underwater caves, shipwrecks and marine biodiversity. Sailing excursions, private yacht charters, kayaking, snorkelling and paragliding provide further opportunities to experience the coastline. A boat trip to Kekova, with its partially submerged ancient ruins, is particularly memorable.

The region also benefits from a relatively mild Mediterranean climate. Sea breezes make summer temperatures more comfortable, while winters are generally gentler than in many inland parts of Turkey, making the destination attractive beyond the traditional summer season.

Against this remarkable backdrop, Lures Hotel & Beach Club provides a contemporary interpretation of Mediterranean hospitality. Relatively new, the property has established itself as one of the area’s notable upscale retreats, combining modern architecture, generous accommodation and extensive leisure facilities.

One of the aspects I appreciated most was the scale of the accommodation. I stayed in a suite with a private swimming pool, and the proportions were particularly impressive. The room was genuinely spacious, while the private pool was generous enough to become a destination in itself. Beyond the suites, the resort has two additional swimming pools, a fitness centre and a spa, offering plenty of opportunities to alternate between activity and relaxation.

Dining is another important part of the experience. Breakfast is served in a separate restaurant, with a generous buffet of fresh options. For lunch and leisurely afternoons, the hotel’s beach club is a destination in its own right. Well known in the region, it combines Mediterranean access, a swimming pool, inviting sunbathing areas, and an appealing social atmosphere. The food is a considerable part of its appeal, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon there.

Dinner at the hotel was equally enjoyable. The restaurants offer a variety of culinary influences, and I particularly appreciated the combination of Italian and Turkish cuisine. From signature dishes and well-executed Italian favourites to local specialities and delicious desserts, there was plenty to enjoy.

Throughout my stay, the service stood out for its attentiveness. The team was welcoming and responsive, with a genuine willingness to make the experience comfortable without becoming intrusive.

For me, what makes Lures Hotel & Beach Club appealing is its combination of generous accommodation, thoughtful facilities and access to one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating coastal regions. It is a place where days can be spent exploring ancient civilisations, discovering secluded bays or simply enjoying the privacy of a poolside suite. Kalkan offers the setting; Lures provides a particularly inviting way to experience it.
