Despite being one of the smallest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Formentera Island won’t be a tantalizing secret, the moment you step your foot in this beautiful isle. Surrounded by clear waters in resplendent shades of blue, endless beaches with dunes and pine trees, it is guaranteed that Formentera Island will take your breath away without you even noticing. However, there is one more fascinating furtive that is hidden in the center of Formentera. Bounded by opulent forest greens and sheer tranquillity, Boho Suites Formentera is the ideal hotel, offering more than just a unique experience.
Today, we are talking with Nacho Ripoll Cabrera, the man who manifested copious amounts of success and the brains behind the hotel. The owner of Boho Suites, Nacho has been visiting Formentera ever since he was little, especially at a time when Formentera wasn’t that prevalent in the world. Before he carved a niche for himself in the family business, Nacho used to live in Brazil and has been in the yacht business for as long as he can remember. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling.

Tell us about your background and how your family business has started?
In 1970 my father was a municipal architect in Valencia, this is when he was recruited by a Valencian builder to carry out housing and building projects in Formentera when there were hardly any constructions on the island. Years later he decided to build an apartment hotel which was managed by a tourist company for 30 years until I decided to take care of it a few years back.
From your perspective, how and why did Formentera become such a popular destination?
I have known Formentera since I was born and it has always been an incredible place, but I remember that back then just a few people knew about it.
In the 2000s Formentera became fashionable as a tourist destination in Italian high society as Italian soccer players and models began to arrive on the island which attracted lots of tourism.
Little by little, Formentera established itself as a very exclusive destination thanks to its incredible beaches. Every year hundreds of yachts are moored in its waters, where numerous celebrities and millionaires from all over the world can be spotted.

What is unique about Formentera and its famous beaches?
Without a doubt, the white sand beaches and crystal clear waters here are truly unique. In the Balearic Islands, there is a plant called Posidonia that grows at the bottom of the sea and generates oxygen, which causes the water to be crystal clear and attracts a lot of marine species.
For someone who has spent a lot of his childhood growing up in Formentera, have there been any major changes?
When I was a child there were much fewer tourists, fewer hotels and everything was quite simple with hippie beach bars around. Now businessmen from abroad are coming to open luxury hotels and restaurants, and it is becoming increasingly expensive to go on vacation to Formentera.

As an entrepreneur in the tourism sector, what are some of the difficulties you are dealing with right now?
The main problem is that there is no accommodation for employees to live in, almost all the apartments here are for tourists, and there are only a few that can be rented for a long period of time at a very elevated price. This means that the workers have to live in poor conditions, so the best professionals do not want to work in Formentera due to that reason. There is a great lack of labor force in Formentera in all sectors, for example, doctors, police, teachers, etc.
What was your inspiration to start Boho Suites?
I travel a lot and on one of my trips I visited Tulum in Mexico; that’s where I fall in love with the style of boho decoration. Then I analyzed the market competition and realized that there was no boho-style hotel in Formentera and that many people would be attracted by the decoration and the bohemian chic lifestyle. I decided to combine the boho and the Mediterranean to better adapt to the environment.

What experience do you offer to the clients of Boho Suites?
We want you to feel at home! We only have 23 rooms and that allows us to have a much closed and friendly environment, this is our priority. Also, our rooms are decorated and equipped with natural and environmentally friendly elements.
In your words, what is it that you want the tourists to take away when they stay at Boho Suites on Formentera?
I would like you to leave with the feeling of having the best experience in Boho Suites and Formentera, and look forward to returning.
What are your plans for the nearest future with Boho Suites Formentera?
The goal this year is to listen to our customers, learn as much as possible in order to improve for the next year.
