Since early 2000, Cingari has been associated with the passion and sport of Polo in India. In 2003, the 61st Cavalry, to commemorate their Golden Jubilee (1953 – 2003), instituted the Cavalry Gold Cup and invited Cingari to be their sponsor. At that time, it was called The Habanos Cavalry Gold Cup.
The 61st Cavalry is the only Horse Cavalry existing in the world. The pomp and splendor of the 61st Cavalry, its traditions as the Forces of the Maharajahs, and their role in ceremonial and equestrian events are well-known. They also form the backbone of the sport of Polo in India. Without them, there would have been no Polo. This year, as we are all recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, Cingari has decided to revive the tradition of this cup and is renaming it “The Havana Cavalry Gold Cup.” The handicap level of this tournament is ten goals which will ensure maximum participation of teams as well as a superior standard of Polo.
Daily matches of the Polo tournament start from Tuesday 16th November 2021 and end with the Finals and end with the Finals on Sunday 21st November. A grand and exclusive equestrian event will follow after the finals, along with a display by the Army Bands, before the prize distribution.
This Gold Cup has always been the most important fixture in the Delhi Fall Polo Season. We expect more than 2,000 Dignitaries, Cigar and Polo enthusiasts, Industrialists and Socialites, as well as the officers of the Armed forces in attendance for the finals, which will commence with an exhibition match at 2 pm.
Our tradition has been that the Chief Guest is normally the Chief of the Army Staff as he is also the Colonel of the Regiment. This adds additional pomp and splendor as he is brought on to the field in a six-horse-drawn carriage with the “Sawars” on each horse with their full ceremonial dress. This year we will have General Bipin Rawat, who is the Chief of Defence Staff and who will be attending the event for the first time.
In addition, to add more glamour, actor Kabir Bedi has agreed to attend as the Guest of Honor for the initial exhibition match, which will be followed by a celebratory launch of his bestselling book, “Stories I must tell” (he has just come out with the Italian edition) over the high tea for about 500 select guests.
