When we first wrote about Elounda Peninsula, we explored what has made this extraordinary retreat one of Crete’s most coveted addresses: its absolute privacy, sea-facing suites and villas, exceptional service and the rare sense of seclusion it offers just moments from the island’s most beautiful landscapes. Today, there is a new chapter to the story. After an extensive programme of renovation and refinement, the property has introduced a series of thoughtful updates that are already shaping the guest experience — and contributing to what has been a particularly strong summer for the hotel.

What makes the evolution interesting is that Elounda Peninsula has not attempted to reinvent itself. Instead, the property has chosen to refine its signature: more beautiful spaces, a stronger wellness offering, new experiences and an even more seamless connection between the three hotels that make up the Elounda Collection.
A new expression of the suites
Privacy has always been the defining luxury at Elounda Peninsula. Rather than conventional hotel rooms, the property offers suites, villas and residences designed to feel more like private Mediterranean homes, many with their own seawater pools, gardens and terraces overlooking Mirabello Bay.

The latest updates continue this philosophy. The Beachfront Junior Suites have been refreshed, with redesigned outdoor spaces, while a broader renovation programme has renewed the interiors of suites, villas and residences throughout the property. The transformation has been particularly important for the larger accommodation categories, including the Presidential Suites, bringing a contemporary sense of comfort while preserving the understated character for which Peninsula is known.

The changes are deliberately subtle. There is no attempt to erase the hotel’s established identity. Instead, the renovation allows more light, space and the surrounding landscape to take centre stage — exactly where they belong.
Wellness moves to the centre
Perhaps the most significant development is the expansion of the collection’s wellness philosophy.

A new wellness and fitness centre has introduced a more sophisticated approach to movement, with Technogym equipment, Pilates reformers, a dedicated yoga studio and an outdoor gym. For guests who want to remain active while travelling, the possibilities now extend far beyond a traditional hotel fitness room.

The new facilities complement the renowned Six Senses Spa, adding a more active dimension to an already comprehensive wellness offering. Spa rituals, thalassotherapy and restorative treatments can now be combined with Pilates, yoga, strength training and outdoor exercise.

It reflects a broader change in luxury travel itself. Wellness is no longer simply something reserved for an afternoon at the spa. At Elounda Peninsula, it is becoming part of the entire rhythm of a stay.
A collection of culinary experiences
Food has always been an important part of the Elounda Peninsula experience, and the choice extends well beyond a single property.

At Peninsula, guests can move from the sophisticated Japanese cuisine of Sumosan to the Italian flavours of Il Borro Tuscan Bistro, while Greek and Mediterranean dining provide a more distinctly local expression of the island.

The relationship between the three properties of the Elounda Collection makes the culinary offering particularly unusual. Guests staying at Elounda Peninsula can explore the restaurants and facilities of Elounda Mare Relais & Châteaux and Porto Elounda, effectively creating a much larger private resort while retaining the intimacy of their own hotel.

There have been important developments across the collection this year. Porto Elounda has introduced renewed public spaces as well as new dining concepts, including Thea, a sea-view cocktail bar, and Cosmos, a new international restaurant. Elounda Mare, meanwhile, has completed the renovation of its remaining bungalows.
The result is a collection that feels refreshed as a whole rather than simply updated property by property.
The Kokotos legacy
Behind this continuing evolution is the Kokotos family, whose name has been closely connected with luxury hospitality in Crete for decades.

The family created the Elounda Collection with a philosophy that went beyond conventional resort development. Architecture, landscape and hospitality were conceived as one experience, with the hotels designed to sit naturally within their surroundings rather than dominate them.
That philosophy remains particularly evident at Elounda Peninsula. The architecture opens towards the sea, the gardens create layers of privacy and the accommodation is designed around the idea of having one’s own space.

More than two decades after the creation of the property, the family’s willingness to continue investing in the collection is perhaps its most impressive legacy. The hotels are evolving with the expectations of modern travellers without abandoning the principles on which they were built.
A place that knows how to remain private
The hotel’s reputation has also been shaped by the remarkable clientele it has attracted over the years. Elounda Peninsula has long been favoured by international celebrities, political and business figures and members of the entertainment world who value something increasingly rare in luxury hospitality: the ability to disappear.

Names associated with the property include Tom Hanks, Pamela Anderson and Charlize Theron, as well as musicians and performers including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Philip Kirkorov, Sergey Lazarev, Polina Gagarina and Ani Lorak. Several Russian artists have even chosen the hotel as a setting for their music videos.

But celebrity appeal is really a by-product of what the hotel offers. The true attraction is the privacy itself — private accommodation, secluded outdoor spaces, individual pools and a service culture built around discretion.
The luxury of evolution
What is perhaps most compelling about Elounda Peninsula today is the balance between continuity and change.

The hotel has retained the elements that made it special in the first place: its intimate scale, its relationship with the sea, its residential accommodation and its remarkable discretion. At the same time, the refreshed suites, expanded wellness facilities, evolving restaurant portfolio and new experiences demonstrate that even an established luxury icon cannot stand still.
After our first look at Elounda Peninsula, it is interesting to return and see how the property has developed. The changes are not loud, nor are they designed to make the hotel feel entirely different. They are more considered than that.

And perhaps that is precisely the point. At Elounda Peninsula, luxury has never been about spectacle. It is about having the space to breathe, the sea at your doorstep and the feeling that the world outside can wait.
This summer, that philosophy appears to be working as well as ever — only now with a few more reasons to stay a little longer.
