Try A Different Side of Santorini with Alma Thera

Where the Aegean meets the island’s most elemental landscape.

There is a version of Santorini that exists beyond the whitewashed cliffs of Oia and the blue-domed views that have made the island one of the most recognisable destinations in the world. It is quieter, more elemental and, in many ways, more connected to the island itself. In Perissa beach, on Santorini’s southeastern coast, the landscape changes dramatically: the dazzling white architecture gives way to volcanic mountains, deep-blue Aegean waters and one of the island’s most distinctive natural features — its black-sand beach.

This is where Alma Thera Boutique Hotel finds its place. A recently renovated, privately owned boutique property, it is less about the grandeur of a traditional luxury resort and more about location, clean simplicity and the freedom to experience Santorini at your own pace. Behind Alma Thera is Dimitri Rotaru, whose more than twelve years in hospitality inspired the creation of a boutique hotel focused on genuine service and authentic island experiences.

The hotel sits less than 100 metres from Perissa’s famous Black Beach, making the sea quite literally part of the daily rhythm. The beach itself is reason enough to choose this side of the island. Created by Santorini’s volcanic past, the dark sand forms a striking contrast with the intense blue of the Aegean. Perissa stretches for several kilometres beneath the imposing Mesa Vouno mountain, with clear water, beach cafés, restaurants and a relaxed summer atmosphere. There is something wonderfully cinematic about walking barefoot across the charcoal-coloured shore in the morning, when the light is still soft and the island has yet to reach its daily crescendo.

Alma Thera echoes that understated island mood. Its aesthetic is clean and uncomplicated, drawing on the familiar language of Santorini’s traditional villages: white architecture, clean interiors, natural light and uncluttered spaces. Rather than trying to compete with the destination, the hotel allows it to take centre stage. A swimming pool and sun terrace provide a quiet place to retreat after a day at the beach or exploring the island.

What makes Alma Thera particularly appealing is its practicality. Rooms and studios are designed with comfort in mind, while selected accommodations include kitchenettes, balconies or terraces, making the property equally suitable for couples, solo travellers, friends and families. The beauty of staying in Alma Thera is being able to step outside and immediately find a morning coffee or a local taverna by the sea.

They can also arrange everything needed for a seamless Santorini escape, from airport transfers and private transportation around the island to private boat rentals, diving and snorkelling experiences. Guests can also book massage treatments, catamaran cruises and a range of excursions tailored to their interests.

For travellers who want to see Santorini beyond its postcard image, Alma Thera offers a compelling base. Fira and Oia remain within reach for an afternoon of galleries, sunset views and the island’s iconic architecture, while Perissa offers something altogether different: space, sea and a closer connection to the volcanic landscape that shaped Santorini in the first place.

Sometimes, the most memorable way to experience a famous island is simply to stay a little outside its most crowded frame.
