There are safari camps that promise adventure, and there are those rare places that completely alter your relationship with nature. My trip in Botswana starts with DumaTau, Wilderness’ celebrated camp in wildlife-rich Linyanti region, which belongs firmly in the latter category.

My journey began in Maun, the safari capital of Botswana, where I boarded a Wilderness Air aircraft for the short flight to DumaTau. It was my first introduction to the remarkable scale of the Wilderness hospitality. The company not only manages some of Africa’s most extraordinary camps but also operates its own airline network, seamlessly connecting remote destinations across the continent.
The 40-minute flight passed quickly. Below, the vast wilderness unfolded in shades of emerald and gold, waterways winding through the landscape like ribbons of silver. That feeling only intensified upon arrival.

The first thing I noticed at DumaTau was the greenery and water. It defines the rhythm of life here, attracting an astonishing abundance of wildlife.
What impressed me most was how seamlessly the camp blends into its surroundings. Nothing feels imposed upon the landscape. The architecture is elegant yet understated, constructed primarily from natural materials and designed with sustainability at its core. The philosophy is clear: nature came first, and nature remains the priority. The structures are designed to leave a minimal footprint, allowing the environment to remain the true star of the experience.

Yet sustainability does not come at the expense of luxury.
The guest suites—more accurately described as luxurious safari tents—are extraordinarily spacious. Elevated above the ground and positioned along the water’s edge, they offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. The interiors are sophisticated and contemporary while maintaining a strong connection to the natural world outside.
My tent featured a private plunge pool, a generous outdoor deck, an oversized bed dressed in crisp linens, and one of the most beautiful bathrooms. The outdoor shower overlooked the water, creating the unforgettable sensation of bathing in the middle of the African wilderness while surrounded by complete privacy.

Of course, at DumaTau, the wildlife never feels far away.
As I walked to my tent for the first time, I spotted a warthog family wandering beneath the deck. It was a charming welcome and a reminder that here, humans are merely visitors in a landscape that belongs to the animals.

Then came one of the most memorable wildlife encounters of my life.
On my very first day, a large hippopotamus emerged from the water and calmly made its way toward the entrance area of the camp. Seeing a hippo from a distance is one thing. Seeing one this close on land is entirely different. Massive and powerful, he moved with complete confidence. It was a profoundly moving moment and one that remains among my strongest memories of Botswana.

While that hippo encounter was unforgettable, DumaTau is perhaps best known for its elephants.
The Linyanti region supports one of Africa’s highest concentrations of elephants, and the sightings here are simply extraordinary. During my stay, I witnessed herd after herd moving through the landscape. There were towering matriarchs, protective mothers, energetic juveniles, and impossibly small calves staying close to their families.

I have traveled extensively, yet I have never seen so many elephants in one place.
Equally impressive were the hippos. Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be another pod occupying the waterways. Among the highlights were tiny baby hippos, some barely a week old, floating beside their mothers or riding gently on their backs. Watching these intimate family moments felt like being granted access to a hidden world.

Beyond the elephants and hippos, the wildlife viewing is exceptional. Lions, giraffes, crocodiles, antelope, wild cats, and countless bird species contribute to a safari experience that feels endlessly rewarding. Every game drive brought new surprises.

One more activity I would strongly recommend is the boat safari. Experiencing the wilderness from the water offers an entirely different perspective. Drifting quietly along the channels, I found myself remarkably close to elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. The sense of immersion was extraordinary.

Another standout experience was Wilderness’ barge. During one unforgettable afternoon, I enjoyed lunch on board while watching a magnificent group of elephants along the shoreline. Sitting on the water, enjoying a beautifully prepared meal and a refreshing drink while observing wildlife in complete tranquility, felt almost surreal.

Back at camp, the culinary offering consistently exceeded expectations. The chef demonstrated both creativity and flexibility, accommodating dietary requirements with remarkable ease. Every meal felt thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and genuinely delicious.

Evenings often ended beside the water, gathered around the firepit with a drink in hand. The atmosphere was magical. As darkness settled over the lagoon, the sounds of the bush intensified, creating a soundtrack unlike anything found in a city.

I was also fortunate to experience Wilderness’ Cultural Monday, a tradition celebrated across its camps. Staff members performed local songs and dances, sharing an authentic expression of Botswana’s culture. More than entertainment, it created a meaningful connection between guests and the people who make these extraordinary experiences possible.

DumaTau is not simply a luxury safari camp. It is a place where comfort and wilderness exist in perfect harmony. A place where elephants outnumber expectations, where hippos wander freely through camp, and where every moment feels connected to the rhythms of the natural world.
