My journey through Botswana was always destined to end somewhere extraordinary. After discovering the elephant-rich landscapes of DumaTau and the water-filled paradise of Vumbura Plains, my final destination was the legendary Wilderness Mombo — a camp many consider not only the crown jewel of the Okavango Delta, but one of the most celebrated safari camps in all of Africa.

There is a reason why wildlife filmmakers, conservationists, photographers, and journalists from around the world speak of Mombo with almost mythical reverence. Located on Chief’s Island, in the very heart of the Okavango Delta, this remarkable camp has become synonymous with exceptional wildlife encounters. Countless iconic scenes featured in nature documentaries—including productions by Discovery Channel and National Geographic—have been filmed in this extraordinary ecosystem, where some of Africa’s most famous lions, leopards, and other predators roam freely.

Reaching Mombo this season was an adventure in itself. Following my unforgettable stay at Wilderness Vumbura Plains, I boarded a helicopter for a short fifteen-minute flight across one of the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen. Due to the exceptional floods that transformed much of the Delta this year, the Mombo airstrip was temporarily underwater, making helicopters the only way to access the camp. Far from being an inconvenience, it became one of the highlights of the journey. Floating above endless waterways, emerald floodplains and scattered islands offered an entirely new perspective of Botswana—a living masterpiece shaped by water and wilderness.

The moment we landed, there was no time to unpack.

Our first game drive began immediately, and within minutes it became obvious why Mombo enjoys its legendary reputation. Wildlife here doesn’t simply exist—it thrives in astonishing abundance. Every turn seemed to reveal another unforgettable encounter. Herds of elephants crossed the plains effortlessly, giraffes wandered through the golden grasslands, while antelopes grazed peacefully beneath enormous acacia trees.

But it is the predators that truly define Mombo.

Leopards appeared daily, draped elegantly across ancient branches or silently stalking through the grass before disappearing into the bush with astonishing grace. Lions seemed to rule every corner of the landscape, reminding us that we were privileged guests in one of Africa’s greatest natural kingdoms. Watching these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, completely undisturbed, was without question among the most extraordinary wildlife experiences of my life.

What makes Mombo even more remarkable is that the safari never truly ends. The wildlife comes to you.

From the privacy of my suite, I could spend hours watching animals wander across the endless plains stretching before me. During both day and night, elephants, antelope and countless other visitors passed directly in front of the room, turning every quiet moment into another safari experience.

The accommodation itself exceeded every expectation. Elegant yet understated, the spacious suites combine sophisticated contemporary design with a deep respect for their surroundings. Natural textures, warm colours and handcrafted details create an atmosphere of refined luxury without ever distracting from the spectacular landscape outside.

The bathroom deserves special mention. Soaking in a freestanding bathtub while watching wildlife roaming across the Delta is one of those rare travel moments that stays with you forever.

As magical as the days were, the nights brought an entirely different atmosphere.

Guests are reminded not to wander outside alone after dark—and for good reason. Lions, leopards and other predators occasionally pass directly through camp. Sometimes they choose to rest beside the private plunge pools or curl up on the outdoor sofas just metres away from the suites. It is both humbling and exhilarating to realise that here, humans respectfully adapt to the rhythms of the wild rather than the other way around.

After long game drives, another unexpected highlight awaited me: the beautiful Mombo Spa.

I was genuinely impressed by both its size and its thoughtful wellness offering—something rarely found at such an exceptional level in remote safari camps. Surrounded by complete tranquillity, it provides the perfect sanctuary after hours spent exploring the Delta.

My treatment of choice was the signature Tree of Life ritual, inspired by Botswana’s iconic baobab tree. Beginning with a deeply exfoliating baobab body scrub before flowing into an indulgent full-body massage using nourishing baobab oils, it was the perfect way to restore both body and mind. It felt beautifully connected to the landscape itself—a celebration of one of Africa’s most symbolic trees and its healing properties.

A thoughtful welcome gift of luxurious baobab oil made the experience even more memorable, allowing me to take a small piece of Botswana home.

The culinary experience deserves equal praise.

Travelling with specific dietary requirements can often be challenging, particularly in remote destinations, but the culinary team at Mombo exceeded every expectation. I follow a gluten-free, sugar-free and lactose-free diet, yet every meal felt wonderfully indulgent. Beautifully presented dishes, creative flavours and exquisite desserts were thoughtfully prepared without compromising either taste or elegance.

Much of the credit belongs to the exceptionally talented chef, whose creativity and genuine attention to detail transformed every meal into another highlight of my stay. It is rare to feel so effortlessly cared for while travelling, and the personalised approach made a lasting impression.

Looking back, it becomes clear why Wilderness Mombo has earned its legendary reputation.

This is far more than a luxury safari camp. It is a place where conservation, hospitality and some of the richest wildlife viewing on Earth come together in perfect harmony. Every sunrise brings another unforgettable encounter; every game drive feels entirely unique; every quiet moment reminds you just how extraordinary the natural world can be.

As my first journey through Botswana came to an end, I left Mombo with memories that will remain with me forever. From here, I boarded a Wilderness aircraft and flew back to Maun, carrying with me not only thousands of photographs but also a profound appreciation for this remarkable country and its extraordinary landscapes.

Botswana had exceeded every expectation.

And Wilderness had shown me its very best.

If DumaTau introduced me to Botswana, and Vumbura Plains revealed the magic of its waterways, then Mombo became the unforgettable finale—a place where Africa performs at its absolute finest, leaving only one thought behind as you depart:

I know I will return.
