Objects of Permanence: You’ll Want to Pass Them Down as a Legacy

The perception of value has always existed, quietly enduring through time. Investment is no longer only about markets or portfolios—it has always lived in objects imbued with presence, memory, and meaning. Pieces shaped by craftsmanship and intention carry a timeless worth. They have been acquired slowly, kept with care, and over time become part of a personal history.

The most compelling objects are those that have always transcended trends. Created with precision, often in limited quantities, and rooted in a legacy that cannot be replicated, their value is not merely financial. It is cultural, emotional, and enduring. These are the pieces that remain—those that have been cherished across generations and continue to be treasured today.

Heritage as Art

Few objects embody the idea of legacy as completely as a Fabergé egg. Fabergé’s modern unique egg objets are far more than decorative pieces — they are heirlooms that belong to a lineage of extraordinary craftsmanship dating back to the Imperial Eggs created for the Romanov dynasty. Each objet is a one‑of‑a‑kind work of art, often crafted with rare gemstones, precious metals, and painstaking attention to detail.

These eggs represent enduring value because they are rooted in a legacy that cannot be replicated, blending tradition with contemporary artistry. Collectors prize them not just for beauty, but for cultural and emotional significance, making them compelling investments that can be cherished and passed down through generations.

Silverware has long been associated with heritage, yet few maisons elevate it with the same distinction as Christofle. The Jardin d’Eden collection reflects this balance between tradition and modern design. Created by Marcel Wanders, it draws on a rich baroque aesthetic with intricate vegetal motifs that extend across every surface.

Crafted in sterling silver, each piece carries intrinsic value through its material as well as its workmanship. Christofle has been shaping precious metal since the nineteenth century, and that continuity reinforces its position as a house of lasting relevance.

Unlike decorative objects, silverware is lived with. It becomes part of daily rituals and shared moments. Over time, it gains character while retaining its worth. This duality of use and permanence is what allows it to move effortlessly from one generation to the next.

Objects of Light and Form

Lalique approaches crystal as a form of art. Each limited edition piece is created in restricted quantities, reinforcing its rarity from the moment of release.

These objects are not reproduced once completed, which gives them a defined place within the house’s history. The value lies in the craftsmanship. Lalique has built its identity on precision and innovation in crystal making, transforming raw material into sculptural forms that capture light in a distinctive way. Collaborations with artists and designers bring an added dimension to each creation, placing it at the intersection of design and fine art.

Over time, these pieces become markers of a specific moment in creative expression. Their scarcity and artistic relevance ensure that they remain desirable, making them objects that naturally appreciate while maintaining a strong emotional presence.

Icons of Modern Legacy

The Birkin bag exists in a category of its own. Crafted by a single artisan, it expresses the attention to detail that defines Hermès. The process is deliberate, with precision given to every element, from the selection of leather to the final stitching. Its value is sustained by rarity. Demand consistently exceeds availability, which naturally elevates its desirability over time.

Unlike seasonal fashion pieces, the Birkin limited edition remains unchanged in its essence, allowing it to retain relevance across decades. It is both object and symbol. Passed down, it carries not only material value but also a sense of continuity. In this way, it becomes more than an accessory. It becomes part of a personal legacy.

Patek Philippe approaches watchmaking with a clear philosophy centred on continuity. Each timepiece is designed to endure, both technically and aesthetically. The watch brand places particular emphasis on mechanical precision, with movements developed and finished according to exacting standards.Production is intentionally limited, allowing for a high level of attention throughout the process. Every component is considered, resulting in watches that balance complexity with clarity.

The design remains understated, ensuring that each piece retains relevance across time. This approach is closely tied to the idea of transmission. Patek Philippe has long expressed the notion that a watch is never truly owned but cared for before being passed on.

Collecting the Contemporary

Within contemporary design, few studios capture the spirit of modern collectibility as distinctly as The Haas Brothers. Known for their sculptural objects and small-scale production, the studio works through experimentation and craftsmanship.

Production is intentionally small, with many pieces made by hand in collaboration with skilled artisans. This process ensures that each creation retains a sense of individuality. Materials range from bronze to resin and fur, chosen for their ability to convey texture and form. Their work reflects a shift in how objects are perceived. No longer purely functional, they are collected for their presence and creative expression. The Haas Brothers represent a new generation of objects that are made to be kept, displayed, and lived with.
